Exercises 4 Function

We are designed to function in 3 different planes of movement, these are:

  • Sagittal (top to the bottom of the body dividing right and left portions)
  • Frontal (sometimes called the coronal plane, divides front and back portions)
  • Transverse (sometimes called the axial plane, divides the head and tail portion)

Functional exercises incorporate these planes of movement and use more then one joint at a time. The end result is a much higher calorific expenditure and oxygen uptake then using more ‘traditional’ movements.

Functional exercises use one (or more) of the 7 Primal Patterns, these are:

  • Push
  • Pull
  • Bend
  • Squat
  • Lunge
  • Twist
  • Gait (walking, jogging, running)
